As passengers, we navigate a sea of clothing options divided into distinct categories, each tailored to a specific part of the cruise experience. Casual dress cruises have reshaped our views on sea travel, offering comfort without compromising charm. Yet, the essence of cruise elegance remains an inviting prospect for those who relish the opportunity to dress up. Much of this depends on the cruise line and the type of cruise experience it offers its guests. Remember that the daytime dress code on a cruise is generally laid-back and relaxed. So, embrace the casual nature of your cruise vacation and enjoy the freedom to dress comfortably while you explore and unwind during the day.
Casual & Smart Casual Outfits on a Cruise
You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin. Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain. Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready. Casual attire is welcome on board – you are on vacation after all.

P&O Cruises
However, in our experience in recent years, this has relaxed quite a bit and tuxedos in particular are far less common. Suits and dress pants, with or without a jacket and tie, have become the norm. On a Caribbean or other warm weather cruise, dress lightly and casually for the first day of your cruise. A light sundress or cute shorts and a top are perfect outfits for the first day of your cruise vacation. However, in most cases men can feel comfortable wearing a suit or dress pants and a dress shirt.
Mens Cruise Outfits
But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions. If so, kids who are 12 and younger can wear nice shorts to any of Norwegian's onboard restaurants.
This v neck swimsuit cover up is very flattering over a one piece or bikini. I love the white cover up, however there are several different colors to choose from. However, I love a deep blue dress when I’m cruising, so I always pack at least one of this color.
If you’re going to the beach, you can wear a bathing suit under a light sundress or cover up. A casual dress code means includes casual pants or nice jeans for men (no holes), along with a nice shirt or polo. For ladies, capri pants, nice jeans and a cute top, or a sundress are all great.

One piece rompers are very popular and are perfect when you’re hanging out by the pool or doing activities on the cruise ship. Very cute and casual, this short sleeve romper shorts outfit is a great comfortable embarkation day outfit. Plus, it can be worn later on in the cruise and no one would even know.
For more casual cruise dinners:
Most of the time, first and last evenings of your cruise, will be a casual dress suggestion. Yet, we weren’t out of place and certainly at that time, most men were either in a dark suit or tuxedo. Most women wore long gowns or cocktail dresses on formal nights on a cruise. On formal nights, cruise lines often have a smart dress code that allows passengers to wear their most glamorous clothes. For dinner in NCL's main dining room or more upscale specialty restaurants, collared shirts and pants or nice jeans are suggested for men (with closed-toe shoes). Slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts, and tops are standard for women.
This cute romper is a very cute and affordable embarkation day outfit. A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet– especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack. Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.
When going to dinner on a cruise, bringing dressier shoes to elevate your outfit is a good idea. Whether it’s a formal night or a casual evening, having the right shoes can add a touch of elegance to your dining experience. Flip-flops, sandals, or waterproof slides are a must for pool days and beach excursions. They are easy to slip on and off and perfect for lounging by the pool or exploring sandy shores.
It can get confusing to understand the ambiguous dress code names for a cruise. After all, you don’t want to stick out on the cruise because of your highly different wardrobe choices — or worse, be turned away at dinner. Generally, I’d rather wear something that can take me from poolside to an elegant meal, and any situation in between. After that, I might want to enjoy a cocktail in the lounge, try my hand at the casino, see a show—and maybe even dance the night away at the club. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels, etc.
For ladies, an evening gown, cocktail dress, pant suit or “little black dress” are great choices. A good guideline is to dress as you would at a nice restaurant at home. For men, this can include dress pants or khakis and a nice polo, short or long sleeve buttoned shirt. For ladies, a casual dress or pants with a pretty top is perfect. Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), are freestyle, meaning you can wear casual clothing at all times, even during formal nights.
Visiting the buffet (usually located indoors just steps away from the pool) requires you to cover up a little more than you’d need to at the poolside eatery. Cruise buffets are famously casual, but be sure to put on your shorts and tee (or a cover up) before entering the buffet. It’s free to pose for any of these pics, and you’ll be able to see them later in the ship’s photo gallery. Then you can decide if you’d like to buy a print of the photo, or even purchase a package with a certain amount of photo prints to remember your cruise. Here are some important questions to ask yourself before you choose what to wear on embarkation day.
These mixed bases are perfect for humid weather and can help with moisture absorption. There are plenty of unique options to stay active on board—pack accordingly. For men, Marine Layer’s Saturday Stretch Beach Pant offers a more structured onboard look with a similar drawstring waist. Check out the brand’s Garment Dye Crew Sweaters, too, for a look to dress up or down. Made from 100 percent linen, Athleta’s Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant for women goes as well with a simple tank top as a gauzy button-up shirt, like this one from Encircled made from organic cotton. Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear.
You’ll also be required to wear appropriate clothing in the Fitness Center; suitable shoes for the treadmills and exercise bikes, for example, just as you would in the gym at home. Just remember that while walking from your stateroom to the pool and vice versa, you’ll need to wear a swim cover up. You should also bring at least one pair of sunglasses on board. You may also want to buy some new items while shopping in the ship’s boutiques, so remember to leave a little extra room in your suitcase just in case.
